Thursty Thursdays | French Hound Cocktail

I love surprising myself by making choices that I don't usually make, all in the name of being an adventurous foodie and not judging a food by my preconceived notion of what it will taste like. On New Year's Day, my sister and I ventured out and about to burn off some holiday calories and get out of the house for a few hours. We stopped at The Grill on the Alley in Thousand Oaks and found that they had a pretty substantial happy hour menu that surprised us with its quality and selection of Grill classics and some unexpected favorites. The French Hound cocktail immediately piqued my interest, even though I rarely gravitate towards grapefruit. I chalk this up to a childhood spent picking fallen grapefruits from my mom's garden and repeatedly trying to convince myself that the gorgeous pink color of the fruit would taste sweet and floral. I was consistently wrong. Now that I think about it, I probably expected it to taste a bit like what I now know elderflower liqueur tastes like: sweet, fragrant and floral.

Well, the elderflower liqueur in the French Hound got this francophile and I was on my way to Parisian heaven upon first sip. The bartender used Absolut ruby red vodka, St. Germain liqueur and freshly squeezed grapefruit juice poured over ice. It was fresh, crisp and unexpectedly satisfying, with bits of a now tolerable pink citrus fruit muddled at the bottom. Lesson learned. Don't forget to follow La Petite Gigi on Instagram for more pics of my latest foodie adventures!

Merci beaucoup!
