You might think that, upon flipping through my blog, I am obsessed with the Kardashians. Well, I've come here to emphatically squash confirm that notion. Case in point: Kourtney Kardashian's recent shopping day on Melrose. I'm in love with this outfit! The flirty florals pair so well with her neutral and oh-so-summery cork platforms! Must try to replicate this look ASAP!

Fond of Fondue

I will be the first to admit that I do not have a sweet tooth. I'll indulge in the occasional brownie (edges only) or slice of cake (princess, please), but you will never see me in search of a sugary snack. Until now.

I think I'll have the sprinkles.

What better way to fete your fine, fashionable friends than with my favorite f-word of all: fondue?! While you ponder that, I must draw your attention to the most important ingredient at a fondue party: the dipper, i.e. that which dips. Instead of telling you about this absolutely genius dynamic dessert duo, I will show you. Behold: cupcake fondue. Not sure you read that correctly. CUPCAKE. FONDUE. As in, taking a cupcake (drool) and dipping it into a pot of warm, oozing icing. Not to mention, an entire buffet of accoutrements, including sprinkles, pearls, and sparkle dust.


Now that I've startled your body's insulin store, it's time to get to dippin'. Here's what you do:

1. Make a batch of your favorite mini cupcakes–homemade or from a mix. Remove liners after the cupcakes have cooled. Pound cake or any other firm cake works well for skewering, but any cake will do. Allow to cool completely before dipping.

2. Make the fondue (more of a glaze-like consistency): whisk together powdered sugar, orange juice, and corn syrup. Adjust the consistency with a drop of liquid or a dash more powdered sugar until you get have a smooth, thick glaze. You may also fill the fondue pot with melting chocolate, regular icing, and/or whatever your heart desires.

3. Pour frosting into the fondue pot. There’s really no need to heat the mixture, but you can keep a small tea light or very low flame underneath just for looks.

4. Display sprinkles and toppings in small ramekins or portion cups and arrange around the fondue pot.

5. Skewer cupcakes in the side and dip the top half into the fondue, then flip the cupcake over and the frosting will drip nicely down the sides. Sprinkle liberally with your favorite toppings.

Voila!

Thursty TUESdays - Potent Potter

How many of you saw Harry Potter last weekend? Here's a better question: how many of you wished you could see, hear, feel, and taste everything that was in Harry Potter this weekend?

As a kid, I was obsessed with books that vividly described food being consumed (or longed for) by the characters. I remember fantasizing about the Turkish delight I read about in The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe and the powder-covered gel cubes with which the White Witch lured Edmund. I would imagine how the sugar plums the kids ate in Mary Poppins and the various gateaux ever-present in Disney movies would taste.


Admittedly, I have neither read nor watched the Harry Potter series for no good reason. But, I am aware that very traditional British foods and some new incarnations abound in J.K. Rowling's stories. One of these is butterbeer, a cold, creamy, and frothy drink, which, according to my scant HP research, is served at the Three Broomsticks. It is, apparently, the most popular food item at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Florida, and is served in both regular and frozen varieties finished with a whipped topping. Though not the biggest Harry Potter fan, I'd love to try out this butterbeer recipe posted on the Fox News website. For the spiked version, add a bit of rum or butterscotch schnapps for a yummy little treat!


BUTTERBEER

Start to finish: 1 hour (10 minutes active)
Servings: 4

Ingredients
- 1 cup light or dark brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons water
- 6 tablespoon butter
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon cider vinegar
- 3/4 cup heavy cream, divided
- 1/2 teaspoon rum extract
- Four 12-ounce bottles cream soda

1. In a small saucepan over medium, combine the brown sugar and water. Bring to a gentle boil and cook, stirring often, until the mixture reads 240 F on a candy thermometer.

2. Stir in the butter, salt, vinegar and 1/4 heavy cream. Set aside to cool to room temperature.

3. Once the mixture has cooled, stir in the rum extract.

4. In a medium bowl, combine 2 tablespoons of the brown sugar mixture and the remaining 1/2 cup of heavy cream. 

5. Use an electric mixer to beat until just thickened, but not completely whipped, about 2 to 3 minutes.

6. To serve, divide the brown sugar mixture between 4 tall glasses (about 1/4 cup for each glass). Add 1/4 cup of cream soda to each glass, then stir to combine. 

7. Fill each glass nearly to the top with additional cream soda, then spoon the whipped topping over each.

Whatever happened to the saying, "bigger is better?" If you're like me, you love a good handbag, especially if it comes in Mary Poppins-esque proportions and possesses the ability to stash and store your entire life. Alas, the latest tote trend is the pretty little pouch that you can tuck under your arm and not fuss over. Not to be confused with a wristlet, these pouches are proportionally comparable to that of letter size paper (sorry, my layout doesn't allow me to post large photos that would otherwise help determine their scale). Here's a selection of a few of my faves at different price points. I think I might snag the American Apparel one (#5) in a nude hue. It looks like it would be super easy to customize with studs, paint, or a classic monogram. Thoughts? Would you pick up a pouch or ditch it for a bigger (and sometimes better) satchel?

Thursty Thursdays - Cocktail on a Stick!

The best cocktails are the fastest and easiest to make, I like to say. This easily translates into, "I need a drink, STAT!" While this one is super-duper quick to whip up, you may be like me and apt to sit next to the freezer, hoping for the ice gods to breathe their chilly breath onto my margapops.

Step 1: Find a few Dixie cups and wooden popsicle sticks.
Step 2: Pick up some Mike's Hard Lemonade Strawberry Margaritas.
Step 3: Fill cups with margarita liquid.
Step 4: Freeze for 2 hours.
Step 5: Stick wooden popsicle sticks into half-frozen popsicles.
Step 6: Freeze for 2 more hours.
Step 7: Garnish with a lime and serve.

Here are some additional tips from the source:
  • A traditional margarita made with tequila needs a much colder temperature to freeze than the traditional home unit allows, so that’s why something like these Mike’s Hard Lemonade is better suited for making these popsicles.
  • DO NOT rim with salt until serving time, as the salt will melt the pops. Alternatively, you can rim the Strawberry Margarita Pops with chunky crystal sugar for an aesethetic effect without worrying about the melting factor. 
  • To keep popsicles chilled as long as possible, place the serving tray in the freezer and then top  the tray with a layer of crushed iced.

Once again, I bring you a work outfit post! I am obsessed with shades of taupe and try to incorporate the neutral hue in all of my professional outfits. What I love most is that it makes nudes look nuder and greys look greyer. It's the magic shade! I think I have a thing for shades and not colors. Something just turns me off from bold and bright colors. I like to stand out in an understated way. Here, I paired soft cropped trousers with a simple top and oversize boyfriend blazer in a soft and feminine hue. Cutout platform sandals are all the rage right now and add geometry and clean lines to any outfit. A structured clutch holds all of your gear while giving you a prim and proper look. How do you style your office wear?

The Royals Have Landed!

Team Gigi has been off-the-wall excited about the arrival of the new royal couple, Prince William and Kate Middleton. We have tracked their Canadian excursion and even giggled at their hilarious giddy-up cowboy/girl getups on their tour of our northern neighbor. But, the wait is finally over. The royals have landed in Los Angeles! After learning of their touchdown at LAX, my next question was, "What is Kate wearing??" Check it.

The Perfect Summer Treat - Watermelon Salad w/ Rosewater Syrup


Well, we knew it was going to happen to us sooner or later: summer has arrived in Los Angeles! What we Angelenos love more than anything is a good party, and we love celebrating outdoors. Unfortunately, it gets way too hot sometimes to figure out what to serve in the 100+ degree heat. Fruit can be your best friend because it's fresh, light, and palatable to all your guests. This recipe is so so simple, but perfect when you don't want to serve a hot and heavy dessert. The essence of the rosewater syrup is just decadent enough to make this a sweet and sticky treat and the melon ball scoops are so easy to eat. Let's ponder this for a second: why does watermelon taste so much better when scooped into cute little balls? Enjoy!


Watermelon salad with rose and mint syrup
from Australian Gourmet Traveller

500g watermelon flesh
2/3 cup (133g) caster sugar
¼ cup (loosely packed) mint leaves
2 teaspoons rosewater

Combine sugar and ¼ cup (60ml) water in a small saucepan and stir over medium-high heat until sugar dissolves, then bring to the boil and simmer for 2 minutes. Add mint and rosewater, remove from heat, cool completely and strain, discarding solids. Refrigerate for 30 minutes.

To serve, using a melon baller, scoop watermelon into balls and divide among serving bowls. Drizzle with rose and mint syrup and serve immediately.

Serves 6

A Mint Moment

Mint Moment


Methinks I am having a mint moment. It's such a fun and refreshing color for the summer and it looks great paired with both brights and neutrals. I think I need a fresh squeeze of the good stuff. I've been in such a fashion slump lately, due largely to my conservative work wardrobe that I find myself gravitating towards even outside of work. I need to get my fashion groove back--and fast! The Bride Wore Galliano - Kate Moss Wedding Pictures

After headlining the royal wedding heard 'round the world (literally), the ubiquitous Kate Middleton has become the queen of all commoners, a style icon, and a cultural sensation. But, let me draw your attention back to Kate v. 1.0 (Kate Moss, that is) lest ye forget about the supermodel of all supermodels, the-most-badass-bad-girl-of-all-time, and evergreen fashionista still inspiring women around the world, who, just today, married her rock star beau, Jamie Hince. The guest list included fellow supermodel Naomi Campbell, uber designer Vivienne Westwood, Stella and Mary McCartney, Rhys Ifans, Jude Law, and Jade Jagger. Kate wore a flapper-style dress and floor-length veil designed by John Galliano, a nod to her support for the disgraced designer. Oh, and Mario Testino snapped photos of the bride and groom on their big day. No biggie, only THE BEST FASHION PHOTOGRAPHER IN THE WORLD. So Jeal. Take a look-see for yourself!
