Thursty Thursdays - Stars and Stripes

In order to satisfy my creative cravings, I have been on a mad search to find an Independence Day-themed mint julep recipe for this week's TT post. I dreamt of wowing you all with a cute and clever title; something along the lines of "Fourth of Julep" or something equally quirky. Alas, the universe is not on my side today, which became crystal clear to me this morning after I killed my FAVORITE sunglasses in the world after a clumsy misstep near my purse. But, the show must go on and it must be well-hydrated (preferably in a red-white-and-blue tinged haze). So, I have *amended* my recipe and *ratified* a new concoction in line with this weekend's festivities. With just a little bit of absinthe and a surprising splash of ginger beer, this one is sure to keep you on that pursuit of life, libations, and happiness.

Stars and Stripes

1/4 oz. Lucid Absinthe
1 oz. Blueberry Vodka
1/4 oz. Simple Syrup
Splash of Lemon Juice
Drizzle of Raspberry Liqueur
Ginger beer
Fresh Blueberries
Muddle fresh blueberries and add syrup, Lucid, juice and vodka. Add ice and shake and pour into highball glass. Drizzle Liqueur and top with Ginger Beer. Garnish with one sugar cube.

What's Your Type? Newspaper Print DIY Mani

What is it with me and newspaper prints? There is something so classic and romantic about the taupe-and-black color scheme and its use on everyday products like pillows, plates, and curtains. Who knew it could be a totally cool manicure design? Move over Minx! This DIY tip (no pun intended) is super easy, super fun, and wildly unexpected. Especially for us wordy folk. Check it out, try it, and tell me what you think!

How to: 
1. Put on nail polish and let dry. 
2. Dip fingernail in alcohol. Any will do. Vodka recommended.
3. Press a strip of newspaper big enough to cover the whole nail onto your alcohol soaked nail. 
4. Pull off slowly and be really impressed with yourself. 
5. Paint top coat if desired (recommended).

Thursty Thursdays - Guava Lime Coolers

Someone could have reminded me that I missed last week's Thursty Thursdays post. Tossing back too many of those coconut lime libations, are we? Anywho, moving right along with my tropical theme, I want to share with all of you my love for guava. The richness of its sweet and tart flavors are magical to me and I can spend hours inhaling its mesmerizing scent. I used to love the smell and taste of Kern's guava nectar as a kid and can now think of a hundred different ways to punch up a summer afternoon with its essence. Behold: the guava lime cooler. If this doesn't transport you to a tropical island getaway, I don't know what will! Alcoholics, rejoice: this one has a bit of the good stuff to give you a hazy (and much needed) mental vacation. Bottoms up!

Guava Lime Coolers

To make simple syrup, in a measuring cup, stir together 1/4 cup superfine sugar in 1/4 cup hot water until dissolved. Let cool. This recipe makes 3 fl. oz. syrup and can be doubled or tripled as needed.


  • Ice, as needed 
  • 18 fl. oz. guava nectar 
  • 9 fl. oz. white rum 
  • 3 fl. oz. fresh lime juice (from about 3 limes) 
  • 3 fl. oz. simple syrup (see note above) 
  • 24 fl. oz. sparkling water, or as needed 
  • 6 lime wedges
  • 6 straws


Fill 6 highball glasses with ice.
In a pitcher, stir together the guava nectar, rum, lime juice and simple syrup. Pour the mixture into the glasses and top each with a splash of sparkling water. Garnish each drink with a lime wedge and straw and serve. Makes 6 drinks.

A Posh Fashion Fantasy

I don't know how to tell you all this, but this past Sunday (Father's Day), I lived out one of my fashion fantasies: I met *Victoria Beckham*, she of La Petite Gigi Saturday/Sunday Style Envy fame and other such fun things (here and here). As I mentioned last Friday, the fam and I went to Bouchon for brunch, hoping to be transported to a Parisian bistro in the middle of Los Angeles. Not only were we among LA's finest, but we practically rubbed elbows with the likes of the Seacrests and the Beckhams. What's that you ask? Yes, their elbows were particularly polished, just as you would expect.

Though our encounter was brief (it may have involved a well-timed ambush in the restaurant bathroom), Victoria was very lovely and had the most well-behaved set of children I have ever seen in my life. They pushed their chairs in, colored quietly at the table, and got up only to use the loo and give their mummy and daddy hugs and kisses throughout brunch. Yes, daddy, who was sporting a very chic tailored suit and pomaded coif. Le sigh. If only I had had the guts to take a photo w/ the high priestess that is Posh, but she was with Romeo and I didn't want to make her uncomfortable.

Now for the juice: She is totally preggers! Her belly is big and beautiful and she didn't do much to hide it. She was wearing a flowy top and some sort of skinny pants (I was too in shock to focus!) with high heels. Her hair was in a ponytail. Is that not juicy enough? Sorry :(.

Regular posts will resume tomorrow while I gather my thoughts and soak up the fashion magic that could have possibly been transferred to me by way of one V. Beckham. Ta ta.

Daddy Dearest

Why is it ALWAYS gloomy on Fridays?? The one day I get to dress casually at work and I am forced to wear a sweater. In my defense, said sweater has exaggerated shoulders and a cashmere-like feel, but still. Hmmph! I really hope Mother Nature gets off her booty and shines her rays on LA this weekend, because there is some daddy doting to do! Here is my dad, acting as silly as ever about four years ago at afternoon tea @ the Langham Huntington hotel in Pasadena. People wonder who I get my goofy faces and mannerisms from. Look no further than this photo. Pinkies up!

My sister and I are taking him and our mom to Bouchon for brunch. He, like my sister and I, loves and takes much pleasure from the finer things in life. Bouchon's LA selections are not as exciting as those on their Las Vegas menu, but it should be a fun time! I'm just glad that my dad gets an extra special day to know how much we care about him. How are you ladies (and a handful of gentlemen) celebrating your dads?

Fairytale Reality: Kim Kardashian's Wedding Dress

I love a good celebrity wedding. I love to imagine the ways in which I would change the centerpieces, updos, and bridesmaid dresses to fit my preferences. The best part of having an imagination on this grand a scale is that I can mentally spend the six-to-seven figure budget that a person of such high profile would figure. So, when I first found out about Kim Kardashian's engagement to Kris Humphries, the first thing that came to my mind was THE DRESS. If I were her stylist (I bow down to you, Monica Rose) or maid-of-honor, I would guide her in the direction of the following gowns based on the different sides of her personality that I have come to identify throughout my years of obsession with the style star.

Vera Wang

The Kardashians and Vera Wang are long time friends (the designer even custom made Khloe's wedding dress), so it is to be expected that she would be commissioned to design an exquisite gown for Kim. This one, with its asymmetrical neckline, fitted bodice, and exquisitely draped drop-waist hem would suit the high fashion fiend. Kim has been known to rock architectural and gravity-defying looks, so this one would suit her personal style well.

Vera Wang

Kim is nothing if not romantic. She loves the traditional ideals of love and romance, and what better way to express that than in this sweetheart neck A-line gown with handmade tulle lace skirt? Ugh, it screams sweet and sensitive in the best way possible. Check out that boned bodice and dusty lavender waist sash. Loves!

Ines di Santo

If I were to get married tomorrow, I would drive to Ms. di Santo's atelier and beg her for this wedding dress. Sweetheart neckline, one-shoulder, ruched bodice, and out of control, over the top couture feathered hem. Di-vine. How awesome would KK look in this dress? This would be my first choice for her b/c it screams sexy, sweet, and fashionista in one package. I can't stop looking at it. Monique Lhuillier Sunday Rose, meet your competition.


Ever the classic romantic, I expect Kim to at least entertain the thought of a soft and diaphanous dress. I am infatuated with the structured draped bust and fun and flirty ballgown skirt. Long diamond drop earrings would do the trick re: accessories. Classique!


I die over this dress. The architectural and asymmetrical detail of the bodice is almost poetic. The fluffs and folds of the peplum hem kill me (in a good way). I can totally see "high fashion Kim" rocking this minimalistic yet outrageous gown.

Thursty Thursdays - Vacation in a Cup

Are you ladies fans of Bath and Body Works' coconut lime verbena scent? I, a lover of all things tropical and coconut-y, am obsessed with the creamy yet refreshing fragrance that emerges when two similar yet disparate smells combine. In a fit of wanderlust, I dreamed of an exotic getaway that promised lots and lots of this heady aroma, all while sitting on a sandy beach, natch. Inspired by my sniffantasy, I decided to start a new feature on my blog called Thursty Thursdays, where I will be filling all of you socialites in on seasonal cocktail recipes to serve at your summer soirees. Some will be concocted by yours truly and some will be borrowed from other liquor-loving ladies.*

The inaugural Thursty Thursday post contains everything I desire in a cocktail: creamy texture, fruity notes, tart finish, and beautiful to look at. All that plus a cleverly placed garnish add up to the perfect warm weather treat. So, ladies, make sure to try this at home (or on your next vacation) and let me know how it tastes! 

1 cup crushed ice
1/4 to 1/3 cup lime juice
1 cup chilled unsweetened coconut milk
3 tbs simple syrup (or sweeten to taste with sugar, stevia or agave)
1/2 cup vegan ice cream or yogurt (you may substitute this ingredient with regular ice cream/yogurt)
1/2 cup unsweetened shredded coconut (optional)

Combine all ingredients in blender and blend on low speed until smooth. Garnish with lime and/or coconut.

*"Other" implies that I, too, engage in liquor loving. In my defense (why am I defending myself? It's completely normal. Right..?), I tend to stop after one or two drinks, simply because I am the lightweight champion of the world.

J'Adore...Olivia Palermo's Handbag Collection

I have always been fond of the expression, "That's why her hair is so big: it's full of secrets." Maybe because my hair falls a little flat and I envy a more dynamic 'do. Maybe it's because I love a good story. Who knows? All I know is that this clever quip applies to more than just your coif. I am fascinated by the concept that magic and mystery exist within a woman's handbag. The things ladies carry tell a lot about what's important in her life and Olivia Palermo makes no secret about her baggage.

In my OP fantasy (in which I play the title character, of course), I believe that we she has endless amounts of clutches and crossbodies, satchels and totes. Did I say fantasy? I meant REALITY. Let's, for a second, forget about how impeccable her sense of style is and focus on her divine accessories. Which of these amazing bits of arm candy would you tote around town? Let me point you to the right answer: all of them.
